Omega-3 is a group of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Three matter most: EPA and DHA (mainly from fish) and ALA (from plant sources — flax, walnuts).
EPA and DHA carry established wordings under European regulation: they contribute to the normal function of the heart at a daily intake of 250 mg, and DHA contributes to normal brain function and normal vision.
What matters on the label is not the total amount of fish oil but the specific milligrams of EPA and DHA per serving.
The key figure on the label is not "fish oil 1000 mg" — what matters is how much EPA and DHA sit inside those thousand milligrams. Often it is 300 mg, three times less than the first impression suggests. The form matters too: the triglyceride form is closer to the natural one, the ethyl ester is cheaper. Omega-3 is a fatty compound and oxidises over time, so a sour taste or a sharp smell is a sign of spoilage, not "the normal taste of fish".
The best sources are oily fish — salmon, mackerel, anchovy, sardine. Plant sources include flaxseed, chia and walnuts.
High doses are not recommended alongside anticoagulants or before surgery — a doctor’s consultation is needed. If you are allergic to fish, choose an algae-derived version.

The European wording is based on 250 mg of EPA plus DHA a day for the normal function of the heart.
If you eat oily fish twice a week, a supplement may not be necessary. A supplement fills what the diet lacks.
Algae oil supplies the same DHA and is the vegan option; it often contains less EPA. If you have a fish allergy or an animal source does not suit you, it is a logical replacement.
Cap tightly closed, in a cool place away from light; after opening, many manufacturers recommend the fridge. Oxygen, heat and light are the three factors that damage fatty acids.
